Your concern
Hair that breaks
Shaft breakage, not loss from the root: the remedy is the opposite, so the distinction matters.
Finding hair everywhere suggests shedding. But another possibility exists, recognised by looking at the end of the hair you pick up: if there is a small whitish bulb at one end, the hair came out from the root; if both ends are cut clean, it broke along the shaft — and the root is still in place.
It is a difference with opposite practical consequences. Shedding leads you to look at the scalp, hormones, iron deficiency. Breakage leads somewhere else entirely: heat, traction, chemical treatments. Very hot straighteners and dryers, repeated bleaching and straightening, tight ponytails and braids, brushing hair while wet when it is most fragile.
There is also a visual clue: in hair that breaks you notice uneven lengths, short tufts sticking up where they should not, frayed ends, and hair that never grows beyond a certain length. It is not that it does not grow: it is that it breaks at the same distance from the root, every time.
Look at the end of the hair: bulb or clean break
This is the thirty-second check that orients you before the visit. A hair shed from the root carries a clear swelling at one end, visible against the light. A broken hair is clean at both ends. If what you collect is almost always the second kind, the problem is not on the scalp and there is no point looking for it there: supplements and anti-shedding lotions do nothing against mechanical breakage, and meanwhile you lose the time in which what causes it could have been changed.
How it shows
- Hairs picked up with both ends clean, without a bulb
- Uneven lengths and short tufts sticking up
- Frayed ends, rough and dull hair
- Hair that seems not to grow past a certain length
- Worsening after bleaching, straightening or frequent use of straighteners
- Normal scalp, without itching or visible thinning
How we proceed
- 1Trichology visit: examination of the shaft and the scalp
- 2Distinction between shaft breakage and loss from the root
- 3Review of habits: heat, traction, chemical treatments
- 4Correction of mechanical factors, which is the decisive part
- 5Later review: healthy regrowth is measured in months
Available treatments
- Trichology visit
- Shaft examination
- Correction of mechanical factors
- Scheduled follow-up

Frequently asked questions
Will hair supplements help me?+
Against mechanical shaft breakage, no: they act on what the follicle produces, not on what happens to the hair after it has grown out. That is why distinguishing breakage from shedding before spending has an immediate practical point. If the visit also finds a shedding component or a deficiency, that is a separate matter and is addressed as such.
Do I have to stop using straighteners?+
Not necessarily stop, but changing how you use them makes a big difference. Temperature, frequency and above all not applying them to damp hair — the condition in which damage is greatest — all count. Precise advice is given at the visit, looking at the hair type and what you actually do each week, because a generic rule gets applied badly or abandoned.
How long before it returns to normal?+
A damaged shaft does not repair itself: what you see improving is the new hair growing without undergoing the same treatment. Since hair grows about a centimetre a month, recovery is measured in months and depends on length. It is a wait that discourages anyone expecting weeks, so it is better known in advance: the result comes, but not straight away.
