Acne

Personalized medical therapies for teen acne, adult acne and acne scars.

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, but also one of the most complex to manage correctly. It can affect people at any age — not just in adolescence — and can have very different causes: hormonal, genetic, related to lifestyle, diet, or the use of unsuitable cosmetics. Addressing it without an accurate diagnosis often leads to inappropriate treatments that can worsen the situation or leave permanent marks.

At Skinfarm Medical Center, acne evaluation is comprehensive and personalized. The dermatologist analyzes the type of acne, its severity, location, the patient's clinical history and previous treatments, to build a targeted therapeutic plan. Treatment can be topical, systemic, or combined, and also includes the management of sequelae such as post-inflammatory pigmentation and scars.

In cases where acne scars are present, it is possible to supplement medical treatments with specific therapies such as fractional laser, CO₂ laser, chemical peeling, or microinfusion, always following an individual assessment.

A common mistake is stopping therapy as soon as spots improve. Acne is a chronic condition that requires a structured, long-term programme: only this way can recurrences be reduced and new scar formation prevented. The right skincare, calibrated to skin type and acne type, is an integral part of any therapeutic path.

Acne and scars: two distinct problems

Active acne and its consequences — stains, hyperpigmented marks and scars — require different approaches and must be treated in separate phases. The priority is always to control active inflammation first; only when acne is in remission is it appropriate to address the sequelae. It is important not to improvise: each phase requires the right therapy at the right time.

How it shows

  • Pimples, blackheads or whiteheads, pustules
  • Painful nodules or cysts in more severe forms
  • Widespread redness and inflammation
  • Dark spots (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) after spots clear
  • Atrophic (pitted) or hypertrophic scars
  • Oily skin with enlarged pores, especially on forehead, nose and chin

How we proceed

  1. 1Dermatological visit: assessment of acne type and severity
  2. 2Treatment plan: topical, systemic or combined
  3. 3Check at 6–8 weeks: response review and therapy adjustment
  4. 4Sequelae management: spots and scars after active acne remission
  5. 5Maintenance and relapse prevention with appropriate skincare

Frequently asked questions

Is adult acne different from teenage acne?+

Yes. Adult acne (over 25) tends to appear in different locations — often chin, jaw and neck — and is more frequently linked to hormonal factors, stress and the menstrual cycle. It responds differently to standard therapies and often requires a more personalised approach.

How long does it take to see improvements?+

Most topical and systemic acne therapies require 6–12 weeks to show significant improvement. It is normal for the skin to seem unchanged or slightly worse in the first 2–4 weeks: this does not mean the treatment is not working.

Can acne scars be treated?+

Yes. Atrophic scars (pitting) respond well to fractional CO₂ laser, microneedling and chemical peels. Hypertrophic scars require different approaches. The choice of treatment depends on scar type and skin type.

Does diet affect acne?+

In some patients, yes: high glycaemic index foods, dairy and heavily processed foods can worsen acne. It is not a universal factor, but is assessed during the visit when an association is suspected.
